Red Thread

Red Thread has become a common disease on lawns. It can appear anytime from early through to late Summer and generally occurs after periods of warm weather followed by heavy rain, during which plant available nitrogen is washed from the soil. It can also appear in lawns with poor light and soil.

The symptoms are small sporadic beige/reddish patches of dying grass beginning to appear.  The patches may be widely scattered or if close together, may coalesce into larger spots and are often best seen in the early morning light.

On closer inspection, red “needle-like threads” may be found growing on the tips of the grass leaves.  These become brittle on drying and serve to spread disease into other areas.

Red Thread is more of a “leaf” disease so is unlikely to kill the root system, therefore turf can eventually recover adequately given time, although it may look very patchy for quite a while.

Generally if the lawns are being fed with a nitrogen rich feed (as in our standard program) the problem will “grow itself out”, however specialist anti-fungal spray treatments can cure the immediate problem and lead to a much faster recovery rate.  Contact us for information.

Red thread can be compared to the common cold, there is no way to eradicate it permanently, only methods of control.  We can also offer medium term curative and preventative fungicide treatments to reduce the effects of Red Thread to your lawn.
